🎵 Song Lyrics

Old Macdonald had a farm
And on his farm he had a cow
With a moo moo here and a moo moo there
Here a moo there a moo
Everywhere a moo moo
Old Macdonald had a farm

Old Macdonald had a farm
And on his farm he had a pig
With an oink oink here and an oink oink there
Here an oink there an oink
Everywhere an oink oink

Old Macdonald had a farm
Old Macdonald had a farm
And on his farm he had a duck
With a quack quack here and a quack quack there
Here a quack there a quack
Everywhere a quack quack

Old Macdonald had a farm
Old Macdonald had a farm
And on his farm he had a horse
With a neigh neigh here and a neigh neigh there
Here a neigh there a neigh
Everywhere a neigh neigh

Old Macdonald had a farm
Old Macdonald had a farm
And on his farm he had a sheep
With a baa baa here and a baa baa there
Here a baa there a baa
Everywhere a baa baa

Old Macdonald had a farm
Old Macdonald had a farm
And on his farm he had some chickens
With a cluck cluck here and a cluck cluck there
Here a cluck there a cluck
Everywhere a cluck cluck

Old Macdonald had a farm
Old Macdonald had a farm
And on his farm he had a dog
With a woof woof here and a woof woof there
Here a woof there a woof
Everywhere a woof woof
Old Macdonald had a farm

Old Macdonald had a farm
And on his farm he had a goat
With a meh meh here and a meh meh there
Here a meh there a meh
Everywhere a meh meh
Old Macdonald had a farm

What Does EIEIO Mean?

EIEIO does not stand for anything. The letters are not a word or a secret code. They are singing sounds that carry the tune from one line to the next, like la la la in other songs. That is one reason kids pick it up so fast.

Where Does Old MacDonald Come From?

The song is much older than most people think. In 1706, an English writer named Thomas d'Urfey put a farm song in one of his operas. It already had the famous pattern, with cows booing here and booing there.

Over the next 200 years, people in Britain, Ireland and North America sang their own versions. A 1917 songbook called Tommy's Tunes has a version named Ohio, about a farmer called Old Macdougal, and it already uses the EIEIO refrain. In a 1922 version from the Missouri Ozarks, the farmer is called Old Missouri, and he sings about the parts of his mule instead of different animals. The farmer's name kept changing until Old MacDonald became the version most people know.

Our Version

Leigha Marina's Old MacDonald visits eight farm animals: a cow, a pig, a duck, a horse, a sheep, some chickens, a dog and a goat that says meh meh. Pause before each animal sound and let your child fill it in. It is an easy way to practice animal names and the sounds they make.
