The Story Behind Skidamarink

Skidamarink is much older than most parents think. It started as a Broadway song called Skiddy Mer Rink A Doo, written by Felix F. Feist and Al Piantadosi for a 1910 musical called The Echo. In the original, the song explains its own silly chorus. It simply means I love you. Over the years it became a favorite sing along for families and preschools, often with easy hand motions like touching your nose, pointing to your heart and making a big circle with your arms.

Our Little Penguin Version

Leigha Marina's version came out on YouTube on December 13, 2018, and later became track 2 on Vol. 6. It tells a quiet love story about a busy evening at home. Mommy Penguin is washing dishes and cleaning the house when Daddy Penguin steps in to help. Together they finish the chores, feed Bebo, Nora, Mia, Okee and Makaio, and tuck all five little penguins into bed.

When the house is finally calm, Mommy and Daddy sit by the fireplace with hot cocoa. Mommy reads a book and Daddy reads the newspaper. Then Daddy puts on a record, takes Mommy's hand and leads her to the middle of the room. They slow dance next to the Christmas tree, with presents underneath and stockings hanging over the fire.

The cartoon shows kids that love is more than words. It is helping each other, taking care of the family and making time for each other at the end of a long day. That is why this version fits Valentine's Day, the holidays or any night of the year.
