Playtime Nursery Rhyme

Animal Fair

Leigha Marina Nursery Rhymes and Kids Songs, Vol. 2 • Track 22 • Album released October 28, 2022

Animal Fair by Leigha Marina is a silly classic nursery rhyme about Bebo the penguin visiting the animal fair, where the birds and the beasts are all together. By the light of the moon, the big baboon combs his hair. Then the monkey bumps the skunk and sits on the elephant's trunk, and when the elephant sneezes and falls to his knees, things do not go well for the poor monkey.

🎵 Song Lyrics

I went to the Animal Fair
The birds and the beasts were there
The big baboon by the light of the moon
Was combing his auburn hair

The monkey bumped the skunk
And sat on the elephant's trunk
The elephant sneezed and fell to his knees
And that was too bad for the monk
The monk the monk
The monk

I went to the Animal Fair
The birds and the beasts were there
The big baboon by the light of the moon
Was combing his auburn hair

The monkey bumped the skunk
And sat on the elephant's trunk
The elephant sneezed and fell to his knees
And that was too bad for the monk
The monk the monk
The monk

I went to the Animal Fair
The birds and the beasts were there
The big baboon by the light of the moon
Was combing his auburn hair

The monkey bumped the skunk
And sat on the elephant's trunk
The elephant sneezed and fell to his knees
And that was too bad for the monk
The monk the monk
The monk

I went to the Animal Fair
The birds and the beasts were there
The big baboon by the light of the moon
Was combing his auburn hair

The monkey bumped the skunk
And sat on the elephant's trunk
The elephant sneezed and fell to his knees
And that was too bad for the monk
The monk the monk
The monk

The monk the monk

The Story Behind Animal Fair

Animal Fair is a traditional American folk song and children's song. Nobody knows exactly who wrote it, but it was already being sung by minstrels and sailors by the late 1890s, and one printed version dates back to 1897. In that early version, the baboon was a little baboon, and the monkey had a much less kid friendly reason for falling over. Over the years, singers changed the words many times. Today most families sing about a big baboon, and the monkey simply bumps the skunk.

The song is also fun to sing as a round. Groups often repeat the last word, the monk, again and again until everyone finishes together.

Our Little Penguin Version

Leigha Marina's version first came out on YouTube on April 25, 2021, and later became track 22 on Vol. 2. In the cartoon, Bebo the penguin visits the animal fair, where the birds and the beasts are all together. By the light of the moon, the big baboon combs his auburn hair. Then the monkey bumps the skunk and sits right on the elephant's trunk. When the elephant sneezes and falls to his knees, things do not go well for the poor monkey.

It is a short and silly song, which makes it easy for kids to learn fast. Try acting it out together. Comb your hair like the baboon, give a big pretend sneeze like the elephant and tumble down like the monkey at the end.
