🎵 Song Lyrics

Five little ducks went out one day
Over the hill and far away
Mommy duck said quack quack quack quack
But only four little ducks came back

1, 2, 3, 4

Four little ducks went out one day
Over the hill and far away
Mommy duck said quack quack quack quack
But only three little ducks came back

1, 2, 3

Three little ducks went out one day
Over the hill and far away
Mommy duck said quack quack quack quack
But only two little ducks came back

1, 2

Two little ducks went out one day
Over the hill and far away
Mommy duck said quack quack quack quack
But only one little duck came back

1

One little duck went out one day
Over the hill and far away
Mommy duck said quack quack quack quack
But none of the five little ducks came back

Sad mother duck went out one day
Over the hill and far away
Mommy duck said quack quack quack quack
And all of five little ducks came back

The Story Behind Five Little Ducks

Five Little Ducks is an American nursery rhyme and counting song. Five little ducks go out over the hill and far away, and each time the mother duck calls quack quack quack quack, one less duck comes back. Kids count down from five to one, until in the last verse the mother duck goes out herself and all five little ducks come back home. The words change a little from family to family, but the happy ending is always the same.

It is also a classic finger play. Hold up five fingers, move your hand up and down like going over a hill, open and close your hand like a duck's beak for the quacks, and hold up one less finger each time.

Our Little Penguin Version

Leigha Marina's version first came out on YouTube in April 2022 and became track 9 on Vol. 2. In our cartoon, Bebo the penguin dresses up in a big yellow duck costume and pretends to be the mommy duck. Okee and Mia stand by his side on a snowy hill as snowflakes fall all around them.

The five little ducklings are bundled up for the cold in colorful knitted hats and sweaters. One by one they wander off over the hill, and Bebo calls quack quack quack quack to bring them home. When no little ducks come back at all, the sad mommy duck goes out to look for them, and all five ducklings come back together.
