Bedtime Lullaby

Rockabye Baby Lullaby

Leigha Marina Nursery Rhymes and Kids Songs, Vol. 2 • Track 26 • Album released October 28, 2022

Rockabye Baby Lullaby by Leigha Marina is a soft bedtime lullaby that helps little ones drift off to sleep. In this version, the baby is always safe, because when the bough breaks, mama catches the baby, cradle and all. New verses tell of a mother rocking in her chair, a soft cloud in the sky and angels keeping watch until morning light.

🎵 Song Lyrics

Rock-a-bye baby
On the treetop
When the wind blows
The cradle will rock
If the bough breaks
The cradle will fall
But mama will catch you
Cradle and all

Baby is drowsing
Cozy and fair
Mother sits near
In her rocking chair
Forward and back
The cradle she swings
And though baby sleeps
He hears what she sings

Hush a bye baby
Up in the sky
On a soft cloud
It's easy to fly
Angels keep watch
Over as you sleep
So hush a bye baby
Don't make a peep

Rock a bye baby
Do not you fear
Never mind baby
Mother is near
Wee little fingers
Eyes are shut tight
Now sound asleep
Until morning light

The Story Behind Rock a Bye Baby

Rock a Bye Baby is one of the oldest lullabies in English. The words were first printed around 1765 in a London book called Mother Goose's Melody. Nobody knows who wrote them.

The tune came more than 100 years later. According to the Library of Congress, a New England girl named Effie I. Canning made it up when she was about 15. She saw a baby fussing in a hammock and sang the old Mother Goose words to calm him. The song was published in 1886 and became a hit after it was used in a stage play called The Old Homestead.

Why Does the Cradle Fall?

Many parents feel strange singing about a cradle falling from a tree. You may read stories online that the rhyme has a hidden meaning, but none of them have been proven. It is most likely just an old rhyme with a gentle rocking beat.

In our version, the baby is never in danger. When the bough breaks, mama catches the baby, cradle and all. Then new verses take over, with a mother in her rocking chair, a soft cloud in the sky and angels keeping watch until morning light. That makes this version a calm choice for the last song of the night.

How to Use It at Bedtime

Rock your baby slowly to the beat. Dim the lights before the song starts, and sing the last verse a little quieter each night so your baby connects it with sleep.
