The Story Behind The Muffin Man
The Muffin Man is an old English nursery rhyme. It was first written down in a British manuscript from around 1820, with words very close to the ones we sing today. Back then, fresh food was often brought right to people's homes, and a muffin man walked from door to door selling muffins. These were not the sweet cupcake style muffins most kids know. They were English muffins, the kind you toast for breakfast.
In the original rhyme, the muffin man lives on Drury Lane, a street in London. The song was also a party game. One person would ask the next if they knew the muffin man, and with each answer, more players joined the chorus until everyone knew him.
Our Little Penguin Version
Leigha Marina's version first came out on YouTube in March 2019, and later became track 23 on Vol. 2. In our song, the muffin man lives in penguin land. Makaio, Okee, Bebo, Nora and Mia are running around and sliding down a snowy hill with a princess. The princess and the muffin man are humans, much taller than the little penguins.
The princess asks if they know the muffin man. The penguins look at each other with puzzled faces, because they have never heard of him, and they sing that they don't know the muffin man. Then he arrives with a basket full of warm muffins. Before anyone gets a treat, he reminds them to ask nicely. The penguins say please, get one muffin each, and then thank the muffin man. It is a fun way to practice please and thank you with little ones.
